I’ve posed this question before, but now I’m following up on some information I have learned. We have four phone lines in our office. If every line is in use, we want the last line to then forward to our internal voice mail on our NEC 1000/2000 system. I called our current provider yesterday, and they said they could do that, but they need a number to forward to. Is there a way to find the number that our voice mail is on? We don’t have to call a number to check it, we just press our “MW” button on our phones.

If I understand your issue correctly then you cannot accomplish what you are trying to do.

If you have 4 lines coming in from telco and they are all in use then what line are outside callers going to use to get to your on premises voice mail? Remember, you only have 4 and they are all busy.

You could only do this with a voice mail box provided by your provider since THEY would see that you have all lines busy and route all other calls to THEIR vm system.

Or am I missing something?

I'm pretty sure you hit the nail on the head. I was just covering all my bases because my boss swears it worked that way before. But I think they had an extra line they never used just for the voicemail to roll over to.

Yeah, you could have a 5th line added to your 4 line hunt group but then the boss would probably want a live body to answer that one also! lol.

Your vm is basically another extension on your system that takes messages.

I'm guessing what your provider was talking about is their ability to forward calls to another number when your 4 lines are busy. If that is a 3rd party vm service then that works fine but I don't think that's you're talking about here.

If the boss can handle the expense then you could get additional lines and set them to forward on "No Answer" to vm and return the calls later.

That way the calls either get answered or go to voice mail.

Exactly. Thank you for your insight on the matter!
