i have a linksys wireless router, with 3 clients using usb wireless adapter. my computer in the basement connects to my wireless network just fine. but every couple of minutes, it picks up the neighbors network. this knocks me off of mine, i have to go into the windows xp wireless config and select my network, then click connect. what can i do to prevent this?
thanx

Check what channel your neighbour is using, then change the channel on your router to one that is furthest away, i.e. if he's on Ch.10 you choose channel 1 etc etc.

Failing that, you have a few options.

(1) Try repositioning your router or use a directional antenna to get more signal to your clients.

(2) Assuming he's a reasonable fellow, ask if he will try changing his channel or repositioning his router, and see if that helps.

(3) Change your equipment to 802.11a (5GHz), assuming your neighbour's on 2.4GHz.

This just started happening .....

Fay (my work) has been wireless for over 3 yrs... and just the other day a neighbor home installed a Linksys router (no encryption nada) It's interferring w/ our wireless network. Ex. Kids are picking up the SSID (default: Linksys) and not Fay's SSID (on one portion of campus.....)

How the heck do you filter something like this, which is practically out of your own hands? Has anyone else encountered something like this, and what did you do to prevent it???

I was litterally thinking of asking that neighbor to turn on their MAC adddress filter to DENY all but their wireless card in the home.... I know that is a solution but wouldn't you think it's kinda rude to knock on someone's door to ask for that?

Please respond....

I solved my problem by changing channels, and moving our wireless router to a different location.
I don't think it is rude to ask him. Explain the problem you have, and your suggested solution. You can offer to show him how, if he doesn't know how.
