I have a new responsibility - building some sort of a network that would allow users to access data on by username/password.
I have considered using vpn but don't know much about it.
Now I am considering creating a intranet portal but my biggest question is how to create folders in an intranet portal, create usernames and passwords to users to access that data contained those folders.
Creating a shared network would have been useful but the company does not have one.
Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

this probably isn't the best forum for this question: i'd check in the MIS/IT group, in a forum more specific to the type of network you have, but here's my 2 cents anyway.

if you have a fileserver, you could simply set up a common shared folder and map a drive to it on everyone's computer that would need it...then create folders within there (with appropriate permissions) for each department....then within each department, you could categorize by document type...you'd just have to set up departmental groups on your domain controller and add appropriate people to the groups...then reset the permissions on each folder to only allow the current group (and admininstrators).

what type of server would you be running for the internet portal? if it's win2k (or anything with iis5+), you could create a pretty simple app using asp.net and sql server(possibly modeled after ibuyspy on very rapidly...i imagine that the access is on a per group basis, not a per user basis...

actually before i continue, what are some details about your company and network like:

how many employees? how many need to use this portal/shared info service? existing network specs? do you have a primary domain that everyone logs onto? mike griffith

Thanks Mike for your response.
I suspected this would not be the appropriate forum but I was hoping someone would direct me to the correct one.
That said, the reason this project seems difficult is that we don't have a shared network. If we did, just as you suggested, I would have mapped a drive to everyone's computer, give them appropriate permissions.
As it stands, I am new to this company and this is my first "test project".
I believe the company is about 200 to 250.
As I understand it, an intranet, not internet portal will need to be developed. This part is fine.
The part that I am confused about is how to create directories within the portal that will allow any one with access to the directory, the ability to read, retrieve and add files to this directory; more like source control where you can check in and check out files, etc.
Again I appreciate any suggestions from you.
