I have a windows 95 computer with a partition running
95SE and a partition running 98SE. I have always left USB turned off. The local cable company is offering 1 MHerz
cable modem for free this month. They prefer to hook it up USB and Win98. Tried to turn on USB in 98 with my 98 CD and it couldn't find the drivers. So turned in on in both partitions with the 95 drivers.
So I presume I have USB1 and fear that it might slow the fast modem service, is that true? Or does the W98 operating system make it USB2 even the way I am using? Or would a USB2 board make it 2, even with the computer and drivers old? Any advice appreciated as this bargain seems too good to miss.

You need an add-in board. USB 1 and USB2 depend on the chips on the mother board. If you have an old mobo, you won't get "native" support for USB 2.

I want you to trust me on this: return the modem and ask for one that supports either:

. just ethernet
. or both ethernet and USB

Then connect it by ethernet.

Best,
Bill

usb1 supports 12mbit/s (theoretical, in real world you are happy to get 6mbit/s), so that it´s not slowing down your 1 mbit/s i-net connection, but believe me and trust @bcastner, opt for the ethernet solution!
