Need to rollback MMC to older version

Here's the deal: Our domain controller is 2003 standard. Our backup dc is 2003 R2. The BDC died last night and had to have an in-place install of the OS. Now the MMC says it is too new to open the AD and other files "was created by a later version of MMC". The actual versions of both MMC's is the same (2.0 ver 5.2) other than one being R2 and the other not.

How can I remove the MMC from the 2003 R2 and replace it with the MMC 2003 standard.

Instead of revving back have you tried installing MMC v3 which is available for download

Well, the problem is that my AD files are generated by the DC using MMC 2.0 version 5.2. My backup controller has MMC 2.0 version 5.2 R2 and cannot open the DC's files. If I go to a newer MMC 3.0, will I then be able to read the MMC 2.0 files or am I just getting farther away?
