i need to reinstall xp, caught a virus and bought 3 antivirus , virus still there only one thing left to do is to format hard drive and reinstall windows, already back up data and important files, the problem is i done this before and had to call windows to reactivate xp again. do you think they will refuse me the activation code, note its the same drive, same computer and evrything else, i am not sure if this is the only way since i don't wan't to spend another 200 dollars for the software incase they say no... i tried contacting them but everytume i get a different answer.... your advice would be helpfull... thanks and happy holidays!!!

do you think they will refuse me the activation code?
No, I don't think you'll have a problem.

Do you know what virus you have? I doubt very much that a complete reinstall is necessary to clean a malware infection...

have you got genuine windows? (that is the question!)

to be honest i have reinstalled a few times on various pcs dues to bust hard drives or just to have a good clean up. just call them and say you had to reinstall windows, it is only on the one pc and you do have a valid license sticker, and they generally just give you the activation key- always worked for me anyhow.

You can backup the activation files then restore them after you have re-installed Windows.

1) Copy the wpa.dbl and wpa.bak files from C:\Windows\System32 folder to a floppy disk, different partition, etc.

2) Re-install Windows then boot into Safe Mode, navigate to the C:\Windows\System32 folder; re-name the new wpa.dbl and wpa.bak files then copy your backed up wpa.dbl and wpa.bak files back to the C:\Windows\System32 folder.

Hope this helps...

Microsoft are very good when it comes to helping customers in your situation, they will not give you a hard time as long as you have a valid reason for re-installing Windows.
Anyway, you will probably find that the Activation process will complete automatically without the need to bother Microsoft. The only time it might not would be if you had done multiple installs over a relatively short period of time.
