Hi everyone,

I need to move my users directory to another drive and maintain the existing permissions. Can anyone tell me the correct procedure for accomplishing this. I experimented on a sample directory with xcopy and different switches but the permissions always changed.

Thanks

You could do it 2 ways:

In Windows Explorer right-drag it and choose to "move" rather than "copy".

From the command line use scopy. Do "Scopy /?" for the options.
Jeff
masterracker@hotmail.com

Of all the things I've lost in life, I miss my mind the most ...

When copying or moving files/folders from one partition to another you inherit the permissions of the destination -- i.e. you lose the original permissions.

computerguy -

BetaGeek is correct when you move/copy from one NTFS partition to another NTFS partition. But, if your going from an NTFS partition to FAT, you will loose all permissions.

Hope this helps.
I stand corrected on the Explorer move, permissions are only retained between folders on the same drive.

SCOPY will copy to another drive and retain permissions.
Jeff
masterracker@hotmail.com

Of all the things I've lost in life, I miss my mind the most ...

There is a Packer/unpacker called RAR which can store permissions in archive file.
