need to move 300 Files then stop

I need to move a number of files out of a directory and place them in another by asking the user to type in the amount they wish to move, however that old 'parameter list is too long' message is displayed.Anyone any ideas how to do this the files are 30 characters long in name eg.

OK - "xargs" 101...

xargs is a nice utility that takes large amounts of data and breaks them down to more usable chunks. Check the manpage on xargs, or
