First post here, and I didn't do a search. I just need to know if it would be more wise to buy another computer as opposed to upgrading my 98 to Windows XP. Here's the deal, I have an Emachines with an Intel Celeron 366MHz processor, 256K Ram, and a 4.3GB hard drive with 2.6GB free space left on it. Someone at Office Depot said I would have to upgrade my hard drive to at least a 40GB which would cost me about $100 and then after the XP Home upgrade, there's another $100. Would I be better to just buy a new computer with XP already installed or could I upgrade my computer the way it is?

It's probably do-able with what you have, but...

You're hard drive will be getting very tight. XP takes about a Gig all by itself.

You're processor is at the low end of xp's recommended hardware.

Those, in combination with the typical problems with upgrading, would lead me to say that you're better off buying new.

I agree with smah, plus you'll now have 2 Pc's, and you can mess around with the old one for testing programs etc(whether you wipe it and install xp on it also, or just use it to run games only or somethin intensive like AutoDesk......and/or use the HDD as a slave to keep data on it only, or use it as a Ghost drive...it all depends on what u need it for....

There are limitations with emachines and low end Pc's even new, so just keep that in mind.
