I have a customer running Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition w/SP2, which currently runs Exchange and file/printer sharing. They need to have a separate server running SQL Workgroup Edition 2005. Am I right in thinking that they cannot use another SBS server but need just Windows Server 2003 Standard. All it will run is the SQL and the related Database application. It will not have exchange/file/printer sharing.

How easy is it to join the new server to the domain, and will the existing CALS carry over (still jsut 10 users on network, and the SQL Workgroup Edition has 10 CALS of it own)?

The CALs you use for the current SBS box will cover access to the new server for file shares, and if you already have SQL CALs, you're set.

Joining an additional server to the domain is a very simple process: just get Properties on My Computer, go to the Computer Name tab and go ahead and put in admin creds to move from workgroup to domain.
