First off, let me just say I'm pretty much a newbie to Linux. I've worked with it a little but only with the GUI. And that is now my question... I've got this server with RH ES release 4 nahant update 3 on it and it's command line only. I really need the GUI installed to feel more comfortable adding user logins and things like that. I do have the install cd's from the previous network admin so is it just a matter of installing the GUI from the cd's?

It may be a matter of your server not being in "GUI Mode" (init 5). Try the command startx. If X Server and Gnome is installed, you should see your GUI desktop. If you get just a grey screen with a mouse pointer means you got X Server but not Gnome. If that is the case, you can try installing Gnome with up2date install gnome-desktop (Can't be sure if the package name was gnome-desktop or something else. Help?).

Knowing that X server & Gnome are in place, and you feel more comfortable doing things with a GUI, you might want to consider starting your system directly into GUI mode (init 5) with a GUI login screen.

To do that, you will need to edit the file /etc/inittab and change the line id:3:initdefault: into id:5:initdefault: (3 to 5). With that being said however, you will need to make sure that all the system services currently being provided in "text mode" (init 3) is also set to start in "GUI mode" (init 5) because each init level has its own set of service start-up configuration.
