I need to inject some errors into a serial line to test PPP LQM on some Ciscos I have. I thought I might be able to place some neodymium magnets on both sides and cause some issues, but the interfaces did not record any.

I need the method to be cheap and and non-damaging to cables. Does anyone have any ideas?

Adtech (now part of Spirent) makes very nice transmission line error emulators.

You can purchase the appropriate interface as needed (e.g. RS232, V.35, DS1, etc).

If you watch Ebay you can eventually find a good deal on one (typically the SX-12).

Other than that I'd suggest inserting a *very* long cable, or an attentuator, in line with the cable you want to interfere with.

Good luck
