Need to implement a Proxy Server

Hey,

What I am looking to do is implement a proxy server for clients on our network. Basically I just want this to be a Proxy Server that prevents users from accessing "undesireable" websites, we don't need any Firewall or Anti-Virus functions. I just want to be able to setup a list of blocked sites and a list of execeptions that we can modify regularily if needed, this will be on a Windows 2000 server that is acting as a member server with no replication setup or needed.

If anyone out there can help me with links or articles that clearly describe how to do this or if they can give me steps or instructions that would be greatly appreciated.

Have you thought about using ISA

. You can use that on your Windows Member server and just run the proxy service only. Pretty easy to setup.

If you don't need a robust proxy server, you can use NAT built into routing and remote access. To block the websites with using NAT, you will have to filter their ip address. This is much harder than the proxy because some websites use multiple ip's in a round robin and you would have to find all the ip's used.

We use Webmarshal. Although I never really do much with it it looks pretty simple to maintain and works quite well.

I used to use ISA but its gone all screwy and I've given up on it. I hate it!

I'm after a new proxy server too. I don't need any firewall or AV functions. I just want to block porn, racist, harmful etc. sites.

Of course, now that we have brought ISA server (about 2 years ago) managment won't let me buy one! Does anyone know of a cheap or free one? Anything basic will do.

Here is AllegroSurf from RhinoSoft. I have been looking around for a proxy solution for a small biz customer and came across this. Haven't purchased/used yet, so I can't tell you how good it works, but the pricing is very reasonable. They have free 30 day trial that can be downloaded.

filtering proxy server, and you can get a 3 month

it is very simple to restrict the unwanted sites. but for this procedure u must know that what websites should be blocked containing a "particular pattern".
suppose u want to block porn websites then u can use the following.
1) open /etc/squid/squid.conf file and append the line below the acl tag
acl porn url_regex porn
where first porn is acl name and second porn stands for pattern.
2) append one more line below the http)_access tag
i.e.
http_access deny porn
the websites containing "porn" pattern will be blocked. and it will give error.
