I am moving my dynamic site to a new host and am trying to figure out the most cost-effective solution. I use Cold Fusion against a SQL Server database. And we have Realmedia. I've outgrown virtual hosting, but the nice thing was that each piece of the setup was on a separate machine.

I've just realized that if I buy one dedicated hosting account, even with a good multiprocessor system and WIN2000, I'm still putting EVERYTHING onto one box....that makes me a little nervous. Does anybody do that?

Maybe I could get a shared server account for the Cold Fusion and main files, and put the database and realserver on the dedicated server. I'm just trying to save money, coz otherwise it would be like $400+ a month!!! Any ideas?

My company has a lot of experience with CF hosting and as a general rule, I tend to keep each server focused on a specific task. . For stability reasons (especially with windoze), I always keep major software running separately. If there is some type of bug or two products don't play nice together, keeping them on separate servers reduces the chance of failures.

With that said, I don't think you would encounter any problems putting CF and Sql server on the same box if it's just your code. I wouldn't stack CF hosting on the same machine running Sql server but I'm in a different situation than yourself. I host a large number of sites on the same webserver so the situations I'll encounter are different than what you'll see just hosting your own stuff.

I have a co-lo client doing just that (asp & sql) and they don't have any problems. The bulk of server stability problems in my opinion arise from poor server builds. If you build the server without all the unnecessary garbage and just install what you need, you should be fine.

If you are shopping for service, you can contact me off forums at gunjack@atlbiz.com as we can help with what you're doing including the shared CF hosting arrangement.

Good luck,
GJ
