Hi All,

I have gotten myself into a situation where I need to downgrade from the Pervasive.sql 8 Server to version 7, and I need to locate this product!!

I am upgrading/moving a client from a Novell server with Pervasive 6.x server engine, over to a Windows 2003 server platform.

I purchased a Pervasive.sql 8 Server engine 20-user license and installed it on the Windows server, no problem.

When I went to hook up the application (which is quite old - called Yardi Advantage (property management software), I found out (the hard way!!) that the app only supports up to version 7 of Pervasive - and they will not be upgrading the product to support v8 - ever!

I know in the past with these types of apps, when I need to use a version of, say, MS SQL Server that is not being sold anymore, you could buy the current version, and Microsoft will give you the downgrade no problem.

It seems Pervasive is not as cooperative, or I have not found the right person/department....does anyone know who at Pervasive might help me out, or what I could do?

I would pay for the downgrade, but I'm out $2,000 already as of now, and have no way of getting the product my client needs!!

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

First off, Pervasive.SQL 7 is two major versions back (V8 and 2000). This means that you are going to be very hard pressed to get a copy of this software. Pervasive isn't going to sell it to you because if they do, then you're going to want to call them when you have problems with it.
Secondly, unless Yardi used the Scalable SQL interface or did something stupid like issuing a Btrieve version call and only working with one specific version, it should work. What error did you get running Yardi?
Third, Pervasive.SQL 7 was never tested and probably will not even run on a Windows 2003 server (considering it went unsupported Januaray 2002, which means it was in transitional support for 9 months before that.

Thanks for the reply, mirtheil.

Well, you guessed it with the version call...you see the pervasive client splash screen, then a Yardi generated error saying something like: "You are using Btrieve 8. You must use 5,6,or 7"

Does version 2000, which I understand is version 7.5, reply as version 7 or 2000? I must ask Yardi tomorrow if it works with 2000.

Thanks again and any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Well, if you are using 2000, you should atleast use 2000i which is SP4 of 2000. A Btrieve Version call will return v7.94 for 2000i. That being said, you'll have almost as hard a time getting 2000i. It's currently in transition support (since March 2003) and is going unsupported July 1st.
When you call Yardi about 2000i, ask them why they do the Version call and limit it to very old versions..
That being said, you might check out the Pervasive KB and search for the KB article id: psql5877. It applies to Peachtree but could possibly be applied to Yardi.

Just as a bit of history, Btrieve/Pervasive.SQL is backward compatible. There is no reason, other than sloppy coding practices, to limit the version of Btrieve.

mirtheil,

This kb article is very promising....I am all over it first thing in the morning!!!

A big star for you, and a big thank you!

I'll post back the outcome. This just may work!!!!
