I am using HP Proliant DL 380 G4 server and have made a ghost image of the OS "C" partition. I intend to upgrade to DL 380 G5 server. When I apply the G4 image on G5, the system reboots right after I see the "Windows 2003" logo. Is there anyway I can make this image work on G5 to the extent that it boots into windows server 2003 and then I will reinstall the G5 drivers. I have too many applications installed and am trying to avoid building the G5 server from scratch!!!

Server hardware from one generation to another on HP hardware can be quite different. I would strongly recommend building the new server from scratch, especially since you are already experiencing problems.

You might be able to make it work with the repair install, but you're better off having the right drivers and an updated ProLiant Support Pack/Firmware Maintenance CD installed.

Here are some links, just in case you don't have them:

ProLiant Support Pack 8.25A

Firmware Maintenance CD 8.60

Thanks,
Andrew

thanks, i have both the FW and Smartstart CDs. Just wanted to take a shorcut to building the new server :) - At the moment I am experimenting in off-production enviromnent. Still if someone has tips other than the inplace or Repair upgrade, I will be grateful
