I have a requirement to put an online/offline status on a web-page that tells the visitors when the admin is online or not (displays an online/offline message). It is acceptable if the admin has to execute a manual process (he executes a script or whatever), to turn this flag on/off. But the visitors to the site need to see whether he is online or offline.

If you could let me know about both sides of the question (the visitor side & admin side) that would be perfect.

Thanks in advance... Thought for the day: Beware of Gods who cannot laugh...

as long as you don't precise which language you want to use / which one you CAN use / which one your isp allows you ... which browser you're targetting ... and so on ... it 'll be tough to help you !

BobtheMad,
Let's talk generally. If you don't mind executing a process you can have a small Perl script written that changes an image or bit of text to say ONLINE/OFFINE. There can be a management screen where the admin can toggle the HERE/NOT HERE form and submit it. This will change the image/text live on the site. I would recommend HERE/NOT HERE and also a small text area where the admin can type a small message of when to expect live support to return :)

mike : the "let's talk generally" was already explained in the other thread (as it's a cross post thread) that's why i didn't re-explain, but asked the "precise" questions in order to help more - i mean, if (s)he can't use perl, i won't give him/her a perl script !!!

Well to answer both of your questions, Yes I can use Perl scripts on this project. The only requirements are that both IE and Netscape be able to use it (and that is not a problem is perl is used). The web-site will most likely be hosted on an Apache web-server, but that decision has not been finalized. Thought for the day: Beware of Gods who cannot laugh...

mike, it was "one of those days" for me as well ... that's why i over reacted ... !
bob, i hope mike can help you here in a more precise way that i can
