I'm new to Unix systems, so here goes.. I have 2 HP-UX Ver 3.0 systems that use Universe Basic. A TEST system, and a LIVE system. I have made changes to the TEST system, and need to copy these files to the LIVE system. Here is the problem?

The test system has a Dat tape backup unit, which has a hardware problem, so I cannot backup from TEST, and restore the files to LIVE. The test system does not have any network card in it, so a LAN connection is not possible. Both systems have modems. The next step was to connect a modem to TEST, and try to dial from the LIVE, and send the files across the modem link. Any ideas on the necesary commands, and the sequence of steps?

I an told I could connect a null modem cable to the serial com port of TEST to the serial com port on LIVE, and get files across this link. Any ideas on the steps and commands here. Please help... somebody out there.

This can be done with the use of a software package called Kermit and the null modem cable you mentioned. Kermit will do your file transfer job nicely. It won't be quick though, so I hope you don't have much data to transfer. Mike

Since you have two modems you should be able to dial into the production server from the test server or vice-versa to send your file.

First of all make sure auto answer is turned on on the server modem on the server you wish to dial into. If this is not turned on the phone will continue ringing with no answer.

Connect your modem to the serial ports of MDP ports on the servers.

Use SAM to setup up the modem on hpux.

Dial into the server with auto answer set on its modem with
the "cu " command.

OK, thanks MikeLAcey, and caa.root for all your advice. I am trying the modems route first, and will go on to the null modem Kermit route if this fails.

I have configured the modems, LIVE system is autoanswer, and defined the remote systems in SAM on both LIVE and TEST. I tried the "cu" command from the TEST system, and get a login prompt!, the login is successful!, but then I get the "NO CARRIER" and the dial-up connection breaks.

The dial-up connection live only for a short time, and breaks with "NO CARRIER". Any ideas? Is this fixed by a setting in the modem, or UNIX system. Please give steps.

I have looked into the modem, and will start polling my hair out if I need to configure non-volatile register setting in the modem to fix this. Has anyone experience this "NO CARRIER" before when conecting UNIX systems via modem dialup, if so please help to give direction with steps, and if this is an issue with the modem, or UNIX.

Thanks
