I'm using CVS for web work and what I'd like to do is have an automatic UPDATE after COMMITS done to a shadow folder (like a website) so that changes are live.

Cron job isn't the way I'd like to go because I don't want to do one every minute or less than that.

Can anybody point me in a directon to accomplish this task?

Have you thought about something like CruiseControl and Ant or NAnt to handle the automated building, testing, and subsequential deployment? CruiseControl (or Draco) have the capability of monitoring your repo for changes. Once a mod has been detected it can start a build using NAnt or Ant or even a shell script. After you have built and tested your changed it can then push it to your shadow directory.
