Without creating a Network Printer Server how do I go by allowing clients the ability to print with my Terminal Server?

Windows Server 2003 Std with SP2 in what is called user Terminal Services Mode

I am being told from a client that I need to allow a reroute to her 'local printer connection' (via RDP)

I do not understand this, and I have searched Google as well as MS, and I am coming up with install the TSP redirect Wizard and such, or have the user muck with their registry settings, etc....

Need some help really bad! Any ideas?

This shouldnt be to hard to get done. First on the TS open Teminal Services Configuration Manager(tscc.msc), under Connections double click the RDP-tcp connector. Under the Client Settings tab make sure the Use connections settings from user settings is checked along with Connect client printers at logon. Make sure you have NOT disabled Windows printer mapping also. You will need to install the driver for the printer the end user is using on the TS. On the client side the Remote Desktop Connection app needs to be configured to map local printers, thats under the Local Resources tab of the RDC client. That will probably fix it, it could be more complicated if you have GPO's that deal with TS connections but lets start here and see how much mileage you get.

How do I know if Windows printer mapping is enabled or not?

Its a check box on the Client Settings tab in tscc.msc.

One thing I saw Friday before I left work is that all clients do not recieve the feature which states allow local printers attached to the PC to be allowed.

Basically if a client has their printer setup via USB, the connection is not allowed.

Is this true, and if so how do I deal with it?

We do not use group policies.

thank you!

I will look into this and see if this solves the issue!

via the KB article, I get to Terminal Server Client and all I see is IME Mapping Table.

How many verions of Terminal Server are there. I know the one we use is:

RDP Client 5.2

I will bring this up to my IT Manager.

What is the difference between 5.2 and 6.0?

How many versions of terminal server are there? I'm use RDP Client.

Erm, RDP client is a client. Terminal server is a server. Entirely separate things.

There is more than one version of Terminal Services, depending on group polciy statements, as well as does the company buy the CAL's or use the Terminal Services version with out the need for CAL's which is another part of the policy.

Again, I am using the version in which we have no CAL's. Can this make a difference?

I am using the version in which we have no CAL's.

You need Terminal Server CALs for a 2003 Terminal Server. The only time you don't is if you are logging in as an administrator to administer the server. I believe that you can have two remote sessions and one console session running concurrently under that scenario. If that is the case then you can do that without the server being in TS mode.

Hope this helps.

This may be a stupid question, but do you have the print drivers for the printer loaded on your terminal server? Port-redirection is enabled by default, but if the server does not have the print drivers loaded, port-redirection (or mapping as described above) is pointless.

Good Luck,

Ken

To answer the 1st question, there is a Terminal Services mode when when chosen does not ask for CAL's for it runs against the Users Remote Desktop Mode.

To answer the second, yes the printer drivers are loaded; however when the client RDPs to the TS Server, and then tries to bring up the Add new Printer, it looks for printers within my domain, and not their domain.

neither should I be able to see her printer.

I am now wondering if any user can set up redirect printing while Terminal Services is in User Mode

You'd have to do it on the computer that has the USB printer attached.

Just to confirm, you do have her printer drivers installed on your terminal server. Correct?

then tries to bring up the Add new Printer, it looks for printers within my domain, and not their domain

The client doesn't want to add a printer to their terminal server session but you do need to have their printer drivers installed on your terminal server.

Hope this helps.
