Need Startup Password?? 1

I have just installed Oracle 8i Prsonal Edition on my Windows 98 machine, but when i try to start the database it asks for a password and nothing I try works. If I connect to Sqlplus first it asks for username and password which works, but then the startup password box comes up again.

If any could help that would be great.

The box that pops up only asks for a password. If I run oracle or sqlplus through a dos window it asks for username and password, and internal/oracle works there, but then another box pops up and asks for just a password, and nothing I type in the box works.

The most common username/password pairs in the descending order of their 'power' are:

sys/change_on_install
system/manager
scott/tiger

What tool does ask you for password only?

The username and password bit works, it is after that that another box comes up asking for just a password. It happnes when I start the database.

All those passwords are defaults, so it's possible that on your database they've been changed to something else.

If you can't find anyone who knows the current passwords, you will probably have to change the INTERNAL password with the ORAPWD command. Please see thread186-32104 for details.

Once you can log on as INTERNAL, you will be able to change the password of the other ids. The sql statement to do this is

alter user user_id identified by new_password;

Please use this method only as a last resort. It would be much better to get the right passwords from your system documentation, or from someone else who knows them.
