Hi All,

I need some help if possible.

I'm a Document Development Analyst, playing with AFP print streams, not a AIX SysAdmin.

I have recently had 2 RS's (2xF80's & 1xT40 - HACMP & Load Balanced) dropped on me and my boss is expecting me to be the SysAdmin.

What I know about AIX, can possibly fill a thimble, and my boss will not fork out for the training courses. (To get to the HACMP course, I've been told will take about 40 days of IBM training).

Im expected to admin these machine, make backups, check disk integrity, upgrade the OS and installed apps when required, maintain SLA's for other departments, co-ordinate machine down time, create application documentation, blah blah blah....

Im not moaning, I cant wait to get my sleaves rolled up and dig in, but can someone please suggest some reading matter (other than the 'Extensive' manuals), Im very competant with PC's/Windows/Networking, and just need something to bridge the gap, but I doubt its going to be that easy!

Thanks in anticipation.

Take a look at & do a search for aix.

When I was starting out the book "Essential System Administration" from O'reilly & Associates (ISBN 1-56592-127-5) really helped me out and gave me a good idea what I was supposed to be doing. But remember if your stuck, just post a question here and we'll gladly help out where we can.

Trial by fire - the best type. I first got into UNIX several years back when while at a HP OpenView class, I was informed that our lead UNIX admin was being fired, and upon my return, another guy and myself would become the admins.

I suggest that you do this:

- monitor this board
- subscribe to the AIX-L list out of princeton
(E-mail listserv@lists.princeton.edu with subscribe aix-l in the subject line)
- Ask questions - lots of them. I've not seen anyone flamed for posting a simple question on this board, or any of the others I'm on
- Get a copy of the "AIX Survival Guide" from Borders, Amazon.com or your favorite book store
- Finally - and most importantly - remember this...AIX/UNIX is not Windows. Don't treat the hardware or operating system like a Windows platform. Don't look to reboots to fix problems. Sometimes you'll create more. Be a good detective.

Good luck, Bill.
