Need some general advice

I provide PC services for several small businesses, about 50/50 running Novell and Microsoft servers.

All are on ADSL lines behind NAT routers, and have Symantec or ZoneLabs personal firewalls on each PC.

Although I believe STRONGLY in showing up in person to provide the required services, there are times when a direct connection to their network would be preferrable.

So, I'm looking for recommendations (and security risks) for the various methods. I look forward to your comments!
