After capturing the packet, I saw a lot of packets like this:

1. WINS: C ID=33554 OP=QUERY NAME=SOMETHING<1B>
2. BROWSER: Announce Host HOSTNAME

in the summary column. What does this means? What I need to do at the workstation/network to reduce this type of broadcast traffic? How can I disable those browser announcement?

Any advices will be appreciated.

You have discovered the wonderful world of Microsoft networking. The first frame was a Wins request. This is very common in large microsoft environments. The second frame was a browser announcement. Windows devices issue browser announcements at regular intervals all the time. However, they do it more frequently on bootup to tell other devices about it's capabilities, ie.. file print server, what version of os, master or backup browser, PDC or bdc. They are not neccesarily bad but should be investigated to make sure that the proper devices are issuing these announcements and not a desktop that is configured as a file and print server. Also as far as the Wins request, you may see these request go out as broadcast and never see the reply if you are on a switch port. The expert will say wins no response. That is because the Wins request went out as a broadcast but the reply return as a unicast packet. Check the following link on node types and how to change that behavior.

How do we disable the browser announcement in the desktop?
