Can someone direct me to a good program that I can install on individual PCs that allows me to password protect the installation and uninstallation of all software on the computer. I have a big problem with people loading garbage and un-installing software on our workstations. I want to be able to control what gets loaded and taken off these machines without interfering with normal usage. I would really like a good freeware program, but I'll pay if need be. It must work with both 98 and XP.

hi denzilla

i am having the same problem. So please if you get any such type of solution please post it here...

Thanks

I've talked to every PC tech I know in my area and no one seems to think a program like this exist. They mention programs that monitor the registry, but nothing targeted at installation.

Programmer, if you're looking for an idea for a new program, here it is.

hi, did the same thing, but nobody know if there is any program like that that can help in stopping the users from installing the probgrams.
but what i came to know is that there is a program called as Winguard Pro, but i don't know how its going to perform. I tried it, u can also try it out.

Thankyou both! I will try this prgram and see how it does. I'm getting so tired of people moaning at me cause their PC is slow and find all this crap they installed. Heck, I even tell these people that the stuff the DL is bad and they still do it!

I will let ya know how it does.

I Have not had the chance to install Winguard. I found out that the software installation blocking feature is only available in the premium (paid for) version. Until I can get approval for the funds, I have to wait. I did, find a free program that blocks software installation. Its called "Core Control" here is the link:

Hope to try this one soon.

If you are running Windows 2000 Pro, you should be able to have ordinary level users on the computer who cannot install software anyway. Never tried to implement anything that strict though.

No machines here running 2000 :( A few WinXP pros, but the people using these Pcs haven't caused any problems. Thanks for the advice though. I will remember that if we upgrade some workstations.

What OS. From NT on up .... just change their permissions.

The Policy Editor might not work as advertised on Win98 (I hate to admit it, but one of my jobs in the dim past was to find ways to circumvent policies).

If you were running anything other than Win9x, Zelandakh's idea would have the greatest merit. At the simplest level you could deny writes to the system folders. It's awfully hard to install new software without placing DLLs, OCXs etc. in system32 and registering them.

If you want something really cheap and you happen to have a programmer at your disposal, you might try what I tried on some non-networked Win95 & 98 systems a few years ago. I wrote a little program that loaded on startup, registered itself as a service process and ran invisibly on the systems. It's only task was to monitor window captions. When it found one that included the word "setup" it closed that window. Very simple.

In all, I think the program consisted of two dozen lines of code.

Real men don't use Interrupt 21h.

This doesn't provide password protection, but you can configure SysTrack 3.1 (from Lakeside Software) to alert you if someone installed or removed software from their PC, even if they are off-site using a laptop at home. If you don't want the alerts (e-mail, SNMP traps, pages, pop-up messages) you can turn them off, but SysTrack will still log all of this activity for you for on-line viewing and reporting. If you are interested, let me know and I will tell you how you can download a free trial copy from their ftp site. Good luck with your problem.
