Hi there,

Does anyone know where I can access an old enough firmware that will upgrade my phone enough for the BCM to recognize it?

I've seen some posts in the past at how to do this, but all the links are inactive.

I have 2 Phase 0 phones, one with newer firmware that upgraded fine when I set its IP address to that of the BCM, but unfortunately the other set is so old that it just restarts when trying to link up to the BCM. Maybe if I use a semi old firmware file, I can set the phones IP address to my TFTP server and upgrade it enough to make it recognize the BCM after upgrade..

What I think the problem is, is that this was one of the first versions of the phone and the software only works with Meridian not BCM.

The Nortel i2000 series phones' firmware cannot be updated using TFTP (only the 1100 and 1200 series phones support TFTP firmware updates).

There is a utility I downloaded in the past that allows you to update the firmware on i2002/2004 phones. It emulates the UNISTIM Terminal Poxy Server on BCM 3.x systems and provides you a method to upgrade the phone's firmware. I've used it in Phase 2 phones to update to the latest firmware, however I believe the original intent was to upgrade phase 0 phones to a usable firmware.

You can download it by going to and selecting "TFTPtool_I2004_old_firmware.zip".

After you download it, launch the tftptool.exe and configure the S1 on the phone to point to your PC's IP, and TCP Port 7000.

You can also update your phones to newer software versions by overwriting the i2004.rom file in the directory.

Hey GM85,

Thank you! It worked perfect. I have upgraded 4 old i2004 phones I bought on ebay for $25 all new in the box. They had a label of 1999, one of the first true IP Phones, not that Selius systems Intecom phones lol. Made in Australia huh? M5xxx and I2xxx sets were both made there for a time and they seemed to have the highest quality along with Canada made phones.

And one other note.

Before I upgraded, I had a POE splitter made for an i2004 and it wouldn't work on these early models, but it did work on one phone I had bought with newer firmware. I could never figure it out, so I just plugged in the power adapter for the last few months. Now that I upgraded the firmware, I am not able to unplug the power from the phone and use the POE splitter with the POE switch.

Thanks again GM and Gene!
