I am downgrading a Vista PC to XP for a friend but I need a SATA driver disk for an NForce 630i chipset so that I can install XP.
Said friend has no drivers or discs for the PC.
I have tried nForceHQ and Nvidia's site, but all I get is a full, 100+ MB driver executable which is useless to me when I press F6 at boot.

Could someone please point me to a page where I can get the simple SATA driver files for booting XP ?

Thanks,

Pascal.

I've got nothing to hide, and I'd very much like to keep that away from prying eyes.

Please provide the brand and model number of the motherboard in your friends PC. Also, try looking in the BIOS and see if there is an option to disable AHCI for the SATA controller and run in Compatibility mode. This should allow you to install Windows XP without needing to load the SATA driver.

Wrong, it is not useless, as you are going to need those drivers anyway, and THEY contain the F6 Floppy Drivers!

but see if the suggestion by IllogicallyLogical helps first...

The following PDF explains the procedure...

I wish everyone would stop thinking that they can always downgrade from Vista to XP. Very soon there will be a point that driver availability will be prohibitive in this attempt. We're not quite there yet, but soon.

And I wish that Microsoft would give us a reliable OS without DRM or proprietary lock-in.

We all have our little fantasies, hmm ?

DRM ehh??? Are you a pirate??? Windows 2000 is still functional...........

Hé hé, ain't that great ? I don't like DRM, so I have to be a pirate. Because only pirates do not like DRM.

Do you live with a cop breathing down your neck ? No. Would you like to ? I don't think so.

My XP disk is genuine, thank you. I don't have any trouble with activation or WGA. But I happen to think that an OS is a tool that is supposed to do what I tell it to, without checking somebody else's whitelist.

There is no valid defense for DRM. DRM has not kept a single pirate from accessing the so-called "protected" material, but it has been repeatedly responsible for preventing honest, paying users from using the material they bought legally.

Given that DRM is broken by design and only bothers honest people, I cannot condone it.

Pascal, this is not the right place to vent your dismay over MS and DRM... it will not be condoned...

goombawaho - it is not our place to judge, if and when someone wants to downgrade from a not so perfect OS... Just leave it at that...

Hey Benny Boo - Nobody said you can't dispense pithy advise or comments as long as they're constructive.

And downgrading from Vista to XP is "downgrading from a not so perfect OS" to what - a not as much imperfect OS (XP).

That might be a good debate, but I'll defer since you're a regular (good) poster.

goombawaho - I know where you are getting at, but it is obviously lost on the OP, and just adds fuel to the debate...

and Yes, XP is not perfect either, but still preferred by lots of users, I even know of one World Wide Company that has just now (past 3 months) made it mandatory that XP be installed on the company workstations...

we will just leave it at that... ;-)

I wonder how long people can fight vista. I guess we'll find out!! I don't really like it but I think it CAN run better than XP with enough hardware and some tweaking. But most people don't mess with it.

Normally I'm EXTREMELY argumentative but you get a pass because I see you posting all the time and you don't give useless responses.
