I get to where computer has checked for bad clusters and
it asks for volume characters hit enter for none, then it prompts for command . what is the next command to start windows 98 ?

TO REINSTALL WINDOWS I'M GUESSING AFTER FORMAT RESTART WITH STARTUP DICK IN DRIVE CHOOSE CD ROM SUPPORT WHEN YOU GET TO THE A PROMPT A:SETUP C:

If you've booted from 98 boot floppy with CD support, and your 98 install CD is in the drive, you'll need to run X:\setup, where X: is the CD drive (normally E: in this situation - you'll see it as floppy boots) to start 98 install.

Or you can boot from the 98 install CD and start install from there (its a menu option).

PS - this question should be in forum615.

This isn't the whole story. Asking for the location of command.com indicates that the format was done from the hard drive in such a way that the install can't continue. Or you took the boot media away.
Both answers above point to the better way to do the reinstall.
If you need a boot disk to accomplish the task see

both Picker50 and wolluf are correct , but where A: setup prompt is, I had to type D:\>A which prompt D:\:> then type in "setup" in order to finish installing windows. Any other command was incorrect command .

thank you to all who responded to my request
