I have a project manager telling me to disable MSDTC on a WIndows 2000 Server. The application they are building is 3-tier...: fat workstation client <-> server <-> database. Developed with VB6.

The client and server code runs through IIS through a propriatary data access layer that is basically a form of RDS, and we run Oracle on the back end.

In this type of application, under the general overview presented, does anyone see any problems with disabling MSDTC? I understand that MSDTC is mainly COM+, but even applications that do not use COM+ utilize the MSDTC when being accessed through IIS.

Is there no need for MSDTC when running VB applications through IIS, and what functionality or problems are being introduced?

I really don't know the specifics of the application other than what I have stated, but every other vender we have had in the past normally follows established Microsoft coding standards for development on our Windows Platforms, and because we expect around 100 users on each server, I am curious as to what I am looking at for long term.

Any and all opinions welcome.

Thanks,

Galrahn
