Need Printer Advice

Hey Tech Guys,

Im starting up a website for my artwork and I plan to sell prints on the site. I need a good printer for my pieces, looking for something that can handle multiple sizes of paper as well as thicker paper (45-60lbs). Duplex printing would be a plus but not a required. I NEED something with a reputation for minimal banding and accurate colors. Speed would also be a plus but is definitley on the backburner. Im in no preference to inkjet or laser, whatever you think would get the quality im looking for. If you guys know some makes and models that would work for me I would love to hear your advice. What type of artwork? What kinda DPI are you looking for? Do you have a brand preference? Which software package are you using to print the pictures from?

All these questions should be answered because there are too many choices to choose from. Because I am a vendor of printers, I do not want the rest of the forum to thing I would steer you in a particular direction. But I would suggest trying a printer out before you buy it. I am byast to Xerox. They allow upto a 5mb file to be sent to their print lab so see how the print would look on their color printers. IF you wish to get more help. Let me know.

id like something able to handle pencil drawings, inks and digital painting printing. Im not sure what DPI would be good, just a decent quality. Im sure the higher the DPI the beter the quality. I dont have a brand preference at all, actually Im sort of comparing now to see which ones are reliable and which arent. As for software packege.. no idea, user friendly would be best, but its not important.

I am looking for suggestions, so being byast helps. If you have a favorite printer for one reason or another I'd like to know what it is and why. This way I can research that particular one and make judgements myself. You are right there are hundreds of printers to choose from, thats why Im looking for the help, im drowning in the toner sea of printer choices and i need someone to throw me a ribbon!

I have been in Desktop Printing for about 7 years. I print color brochures, business cards, etc.
I have always found the Xerox Phaser for best overall, but not necessarily quality. If you want high quality, you need an inkjet photo printer, BUT also if you deal in volume, the cost would be way to much.

I compromise and use a Xerox Phaser. It gives me speed, acceptable quality, and can print on heavy card stock. (just about anything, really).

But at the same time, I have found an HP 3550 (not postscript) that will do about the same quality, sometimes better, less the speed. for about $300 cheaper.

Aslo, I might add, the HP 3550 does band sometimes. depending on the circumstances. The xerox never has.

No, really, for production needs in this area, the Phaser is your best bet.It allows for a wide spectrum of color application, and profiles. The amount of pages per ink stick vs cartridge is a no brainer.Happy printing!
