Had a client approach me about a new punch clock system for their employees and i'm looking for opinions on how to carry it out... There is also an option of going with serial comm.

There are going to be 4 in the main building and 3 outside. The internal wiring isn't a problem, it's the ones on the outside of the building. They will lie about 1000 feet away from anything out in the construction yard.

I've thought about wireless but anything off the shelf won't do it. i've dealt with lucent equipment in the past and I know it will do it but an Avaya (formerly lucent) reseller isn't the easiest to get in touch with.

I'm thinking burying fiber is my only other option...

Any other ideas? I live in northern alberta so this system has to handle extreme cold, down to -40

Thanks.

If you are using serial communications RF will do it and is well within limits.

To me serial + networking = Lantronix

I have not tried this device but it should be able to do what you need:

As far as the -40 temperature range is concerned you will likley need some sort of an heated enclosure. For the 1000' you may need a better antenna. The WiBox uses a RP-SMA antenna connector which are widely available (try
Call Lantronix they are quite helpful.

Thanks, i'll check into these suggestions...
