I have a hp700 NIS SERVER THAT RAN GOOD

Problem:

I had a guy look at the system to see if he could remove the old pw's he took the main drive fdisked it and tried to load win95 on it.

Now I need a o/s to get the system up and running
I have a workstation but it has a pw on it too.
I would like to start the system fresh if I can find the hp o/s.

what can I do?
Can someone out there help a newbiee? #-)

Oops.....

Well, these things happen.

Do you have:

1 - Any HP CD's with HPUX on them?

2 - A maintenance contract with HP? Mike

Email welcome if you're in a hurry or something -- but post in tek-tips as well please, and I will post my reply here as well.

Hi MIKE thanks for the reply

to answer your questions no I do not have nether or these items.

Its a old system Iam trying to get running
for a educational project for youth in the area.

What do you suggest?

I can't be much help I'm afraid. In your place I would contact HP and explain he situation to them, it may be that as you are working with an educational project that they may supply an OS for just the media cost.

Have a look at this URL to find someone near you:

Your difficulty will be in making sure you're talking to the right person. Go for someone in marketing if you can. Mike

Hi

I'm sorry if I've missed something, but if you have a workstation with hp-ux on it, and you try to run fdisk, it should fail.
This might not be a catastrophic situation, how far will a boot get?

Queenie

I agree with Queenie. Seems like something is missing here.

fdisk would only be an option if the drive was put into a PC. This wouldn't be a good thing!

If you have another HP-UX box around (similar model and OS ver), there are other options.

The following assumes either box has access to a dds tape drive, and that we can get to a good HP-UX box (prefer same model for make_recovery)

1) recover root password from good box
(let us know if you have one)
2) download and install Ignite/UX
3) create a make_recovery tape using Ignite/UX
4) boot your bad box from tape to restore

Ignite/UX can be downloaded for free at
If you've lost the root password to your box, there are ways to recover from it. Post a reply if you need more help!

First I must say thank you to all of you for your donation of time and knowledge.

THE PROBLEM
the main server drive was fdisked and they tried to load win98 on it. (to take it home)

I have two workstations that were part of the main system. one workstation that boots up to the hp password screen
and thats as far as I can get with those drive

I was thinking.... start with a new drive and new hp server software, or try linux

I will try the downloads to set up a new system if I need more help I will shout thank you all again.

<smile> something has *indeed* gone badly wrong - don't think he means fdisk really....

Wicked,

I don't think you will be able to get a copy of Linux to run on HP700 hardware. Go for the new HP server (well, workstation) software. Shouldn't be any need for a new drive though.

Before you do that - go ask the guy, who told you he ran fdisk, what he did again. If that's HP700 h/w then he didn't run fdisk, and Win98 is a *definite* no-no....

It might be that your system is still there - so make sure you ask him. Mike
