I have an existing network setup in my apt that I am very happy with so far. But my son now has a Nintendo DSi that he wants to be able to connect to the internet with. Apparently the only way for it to connect to the internet is through a wireless (wifi) connection. So I bought this Linksys E1000 wireless router that I hope I can integrate into my current network. First I have a cable modem with only 1 RJ45 port on the back. I have it connected to a Netgear FVS318 and all the other computers connect to the internet via the FVS318. Is it possible to just plug the Linksys into one of the ports on the FVS318 and then connect to the Linksys and the internet with my wireless devices?
Thanks in advance for all your help...

The best thing to do would be to just take the netgear out and put in the Linksys. Unless you have some specific settings on the Netgear (VPN, Port Forwarding, etc), you can just plug in the Linksys and it should work. You will need to run through the web based setup though, very simple. Also, you may need to reset your cable modem. Some of them lock in the MAC address and will need a reset to clear it, or you may need to call the cable provider to clear or change the MAC address.

Another option would be to turn off the routing and DHCP settings of the linksys, set it to an IP address that is in the same subnet as the Netgear and use it as an access point, you won't connect anything to the WAN/Internet port in this config, just to one of the switch ports. I actually have this setup myself, my entire home network is Cisco, we needed a wireless N AP and instead of spending the money right now for a Cisco AP, I just turned a Netgear wireless N router into an AP.

If you need help configuring either option, email me at adam.collard@ustransportservices.com and I'll help.
