Hi, a friend of mine has a home network consisting of 4 computers and two printers. Everything is connected via cat 5 and using TCP/IP. All four computers were using Windows 98 with the printers connected to two of the computers and shared out to the rest of the network. Everything was working fine. He then upgraded one of the computers (without a printer connected) to Win 2000 and lost the ability to print from ALL of the computers. He has tried the usual things...rebooting, and removing the printers and re-adding them to no avail. Anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be?

Replace the drivers with Windows 2000 drivers, re-create the shared printer, & remap the printers on the client machines. If that doesnt work, let us know & we can go further.

Remember that on Win2k and NT40, when using the computers as a workgroup you need to have user accounts setup on Win2k pro machine that matches the username and password on the 98 machines for them to use shared printer.

You need to make a login account on the windows 2k machine for all the other machines connected to the Lan, then you need to map the printer to the machines that require print sharing. What you may also need to do is load the drivers for that printer on all the machines so it can send the data to it.. hope this helps..

we have a LAN connecting 3 win98se, and 2 win2k systems and we all can use the printer connected to one of the win2k machines.

Thanks everyone for your help. I need some clarification. The two printers on this network are connected to the win 98 machines. So, why would I need win 2000 drivers for the win 98 machines to print? Also, I don't think there are any passwords involved on the win 98 machines. I will check though. So, why would login information be required?
