Hi all I am a systems test engineer that is slowly becoming our groups system admin.

We are moving our old file server from an HP ML570 to a newer ML370G5 unit.

I didn't think things through very well, not being a full time admin and all. I have the new box up and running 2008. I need to get the old users and groups on it and off of the old box running 2003. Is there an easy way to do this?

The old unit is a member server in our corporate domain and I am still trying to get the new unit in as a member server on our domain.

Any suggestions on the best method to migrate users and groups?

I have been google searching but keep coming up empty. So I figure forums always work for me and here I am.

Are the users/groups for the old server local users/groups or domain users/groups. If it is set up properly then they are most likely domain rather than local, which means that once you join the 2008 server to the domain then they will be available there as well.

Unless you mean that you need to migrate the file shares to the new server and keep the permissions intact. In that case I'd use Robocopy (free utility) and specify the options to preserve the security when it copies the files. Of course, your new server will have to be a member of the domain for this as well.

Thanks a load for the feedback. I think you may have put me on the right track.

I am having a problem getting the new serve into the domain, so once I get that done then the users and groups should be good. And then I need to use the robocopy to get my shares and permissions over to the new box. I will begin studying that to make sure I understand it.

Thanks mcferrin!! I'll keep you posted on my progress.
