So I have kind of given up trying to figure out a few things on the UC module. I might be missing something simple. I am not sure. I upgraded the IP Office Control unit to R11 and would prefer to update the UC to R11 as well but kind of stuck. I also need to upload some custom wav files. I can access the UC module using VM Pro client as well using the Web interface. I seem to be stuck with the SSH and Linux part. At this point I am will to pay someone some $$ to help out, depending on how much that might be.. LOL. At some point, I can just install a windows PC and be done, but would really like to us the UC if possible, seems to save some space and such. I am curious on a side note, has anyone attempted to change the UC module from Linux to Windows?

I think you can DM here..please let me know if you are interested. Thank you.

You can use WinSCP to transfer files if that helps.

I can't see the UCM running Windows as the SSD is only about 32gb. Anyway the Windows server is being phased out.

I seem to be getting stuck on the WinScP.. maybe missing a step? I thought I would just pay someone to remote in and make changes..

What you need is a monitor keyboard and mouse connected to the UCM. Then you can do this...

At the linux prompt login as root.
Enter: sudo vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config
Press ‘I’ to enter into insert mode and modify the entry.
Change PermitRootLogin no to PermitRootLogin yes
Press esc key to exit insert.
Type :wq to write and exit the editor.
At the command line type ‘service sshd restart’ to restart the service.
This will allow full access to the server file structure through WinSCP.
It is best practice to change this back to ‘no’ when the process is complete.

R11+ turns off root access through ssh. Then you can upload anything to any where. Then you can add custom prompts.

Making some assumptions here. If you had access to licensing and such to upgrade to R11 you have SSO access so I don't understand why you don't have access to the docs and files to upgrade the UCM. Maybe I am missing something.

I used to be an Avaya BP with SSO access and all. In 2019 a serious injury basically forced me out of work for the entire year. Reset my life back to square one. So I am slowly trying to work my way back into things. I go through another BP that I know, but they lack some of the other expertise on here.

You never stated what version you started with. If I were you I would get the software from the BP. Upgrade the UCM to at least 11.0.4 then upgrade to 11.1 if that is were you are wanting to go. 11.1 uses an upgraded version of Linux, so you have to backup and reinstall either way. IMHO R11.1 is still not a stable release.

I don't know a lot about the UCM. We have one that we sold only because it was an RFP and we didn't have a choice. I do know it is an app server on a card. At one point, which may not be fact for this release, the UCM gave you a virtual VM Pro license. In theory you could use a Windows server if that is the case. Just spin up the Win version and point the IPO to it.

Currently the technical side of the knowledge base isn't SSO locked, so you have full access to the tech docs at

V1 700501442 came with a preferred edition license and was priced accordingly. As long as it is installed , not even turned on, it will act as virtual licence if you choose to run the server elsewhere. It doesn't have a good reputation as many of the memory cards failed. Avaya did replace them and you can identify these with a blue sticker.

V2 700501442 needed a separate preferred edition license.

I have the V2. The unit does have VM Pro license. At this point, I am inclined to just run the system using a windows PC and put the UC module up for sale. I was motivated to use it since the space is small and I didn't need to worry about adding another PC. It seems to actually run fine even though the IP Office version is 11.0 and the UC version is 9.0. But since I am having issues trying to load the wav files I might just bail. I might try hooking a monitor and keyboard to it tonight just to see what is there.

I almost gave up telecom after my injury..but could not competely stay away.. LOL..

I appreciate everyone's input and advice. The forum is always extremely helpful.

just an update. I did manage to get the ISO file and update the UC module correctly. Its running smooth and I have full access to it.. the USB upgrade failed, but a full install and ignition did the trick.

thanks to budbyrd for the info on turning the SSH back on once you upgrade to R11. I almost abandoned it, but since they are moving everything to the app server it is probably something I should at least try to get to know.

I am still working on transferring the wav files. Still a bit stuck on that . I am exploring transferring them to a USB and then going that route, but not sure yet.

critchey.... Thank you! that was what I was missing! WinSCP made transferring those files a snap. I apologize if I missed it earlier. Thanks again.
