i am trying to pass my mock hardware exam and am struggling on a few questions

1 customer wants to connect two computers using a single cable. He has the following cables to hand
serial
parrellel
10base2
10baseF
which of the cables can you use to complete the connection
i say serial and parrellel

2 you install a nic into a win98 pc, windows fails to recognise the card, device manager reports no conflicts but the card does not show

which of the of the following factors should you examine

the os
the control panel
the bios
the nic

i would say the nic (see if the is any activity lights)
the control panel so you can try to add it using the add new hardware wizard

1: Parallel, I don't know of any way to do it through serial

2: NIC, I'd say best bet is to make sure the NIC is properly seated or switch the slot its in.

thanks for the help
sorry i forgot to add
what are the two best ways to connect (customer willing to spend a very small amount of money if required)

i would still go with serial and parrellel

I intended to post yesterday, but got busy.

1. As MoneyDukes points out, parallel would be best, but I do believe you can do it with serial (the hyperterm can work on serial, just never tried it PC to PC, only PC to router).

2. This particular issue can be several things. In your first post, you stated you would look at the activity lights. That will really only tell you if the card is receiving power/seated correctly. Not all PC's will show activity if the BIOS doesn't recognize the card. Hence, I would ensure that the BIOS is PNP enabled (if the BIOS supports such), then check the OS/Control Panel, to include ensuring the NIC is on the HAL of the OS.

After further review I'll add this, based on the question saying he has a "serial" cable available then it would not be a correct answer.
PC to PC communications could be accomplished through a serial connection but you needed a special "null-modem" cable. This was a serial cables equivalent of a "cross-over" cable.
So I still think the only valid answer would be the Parallel cable.

hay many thanks for your input, i really appreciate it, i need to pass the a plus so that i can start my mcse,
as the person is able to spend a little money i think he would buy a null modem cable.

thanks for the
bios, control panel input.
At least i know i am on the right track.

just another one i would like some views on,
a user trys to save to a scsi hard drive but is unable to
i cannot work out if it is due to duplicate scsi id or termination, surely with termination none of the scsi deives would work (what is if there is only one..the scsi hdd)
there is no clue in the question.
i really appreicaite your help here, i am not answers but to see if i am on the right track

sorry it does say "you assemble a chain of scsi devices, you attempt to save a file to a scsi hard drive an it fails unexpectly
