I will be building a freeBSD server out of a Dell PowerEdge 4300 server with at the very least dual PIII 500mhz processors or 1 PIII 700mhz processor. I want to make it a file / iTunes / DHCP / WINS (or equivalent) / router / firewall server. I was wondering what the least amount of space was i would need for the OS, Apps and swap file would be. I am trying to go as light as possible here. Also, is there a way to script the install so it only installs only what i need? i will not be working with a gui at all, and this will be my first major linux project. Thanks to all who help!

I also want to do software RAID (if possible)

How are you installing your machine? From disk, ftp???

Also, what version of FreeBSD are you planning to run?

I currently run 4 Dell Racks similiar to the set-up you need.

Just let me know...

I planned to use version 5.3 stable (it on the site right now), and it'll probably all be installed from cds as i don't have an internet connection at home yet.

file / iTunes (mt-daapd) / DHCP / WINS (or equivalent) / router / firewall (might put in a 3rd nic)

Under 400mb for the OS/kernel installation. Within the install you can select "Minimal Install". From there use ports collection to install the other packages you want.

As for swap space.. Set-up the swap to be aleast double of the RAM available.

so all of those are in the ports directory? Is there an equivalent or replacement for wins? Also, what port should i use to get web interfaces for DHCP, Firewall, File etc?

UnixJunky: Yer website doesn't work

also..

There are many ways of installing ports..

The easiest way is:

% /stand/sysinstall

Select post-installation, install from ftp

"Yer website doesn't work"

I am aware of this.. The DNS fairy forgot to set-up a record for it. This website is a work in progress since 2003.

i think for now i will go with just the file, dhcp, and MT-Daapd. Later on i will add the other functions. I will have enough to do just to get those going. How hard is it to setup NFS?
