One of our phones at work is not automatically going to the call coming in. I have to manually select it in order to answer. I have switched the phone with a different one so I know it's not the phone. Any ideas what it could be? Here is a link to some pictures I took of the components I believe may be at fault (Allen Tel Modular and Bridging Adapter):

Thanks

Adam

Looked at your pix - that's just the connector. Although that old school, the modular adapters allow you to use the Merlin without pulling new wire. However, that's not what the problem is here.

You will not be able to automatically connect to the incoming line, unless your extension is also programmed to ring.

On the left side of the phone is a 3 position slide switch. The middle is normal, the "T" is for test (the lights will flash and the phone will ring), and the "P" is for program.

Slide the switch to "P". Touch each line button, to toggle the light to solid on. If the light is off, the line doesn't ring. If it gives you an additional option of a flashing light, that is delayed ring. Solid on is immediate ring. Get all the lines to immediate, slide the switch back to the middle, and you should be good.

What you are looking to accomplish is called "ringing line preference". It is a fixed feature on the 410 as long as the line is ringing at the phone.

If the phone does not ring and you want to use ALS slide the T/P swith on the side to P and press each line button until the red lighes are on solid then slide it back to the middle

Also IF the control unit does not have a feature pack installed, ringing is turned off and on by little switches on the front of the control unit. It is very rare to not have a feature pack installed.

Let us know how you make out.

Also the adapter in the picture has nothing to do with it.

Sorry for the double post. I did't read TTT's relpy altheway through

I have no idea if the phone ever did it in the first place. So each extention (phone) has to be individually programmed to automatically connect to the incoming call? The 4 other phones do it, but just one doesn't. I found the instructions on how to program it on the AVAYA website.

Please respond with a yes or no: Each extention (phone) must be individually programmed?

Thanks for the help.

Adam

What the responders are saying is that a phone must be programmed to ring in order for it to automatically answer an incoming call without pressing the line button. The system is designed this way so that a user does not mistakenly answer an incoming call when they were lifting their handset to make an outgoing call.

Yes, the ringing is set on each phone individually.

Good luck
Mike

Ah... thank you so much everyone. I will program it Monday. I was confused of why it was the only one that wasn't programmed and I didn't want to program it if it might screw something up. Thanks again.

If you haven't done so already, consider downloading the manual from Avaya.com. It should still be online. If you cannot find it, let me know and I can track one down for you.

I found this at the AVAYA website: (I pasted the text below.)

How do I program Automatic Line Selection for MERLIN®?

This feature controls the order of the lines you get when you make a call. You can name all, some, or none of your lines for Automatic Line Selection.
-----------------------------------------------------------
On the old Merlin Legend 5 button phones, a red "line selector notification" automatically jumps to the line that is ringing. The one phone doesn't do that. I have to manually select the line that is ringing in order to answer it. The information on the website says "when you make a call". I'm talking about when you recieve one. Sorry for continuing beat the dead horse, but is the website wrong?

It's really pretty simple:

When the phone is idle, not receiving an incoming call, there will be a red light lit. This indicates which line you will get when you lift the handset to make an OUTGOING call. You can change the order of the line selection through Auto Line Select.

When a call rings in, IF THE EXTENSION IS PROGRAMMED TO RING ON THE LINE, the phone will grab it when you lift the handset. If the extension is NOT programmed to ring, the red light will jump to the next line in the Auto Line Selection sequence, and if you lift the handset, you will get the idle line instead of the incoming call.

If the phone IS programmed to ring, and a line is ringing, and you DON'T want to answer the call, but instead make a outgoing call, you must press an IDLE line BEFORE lifting the handset.

Thank you, that's the plain english I wanted (and needed) to hear :)
