Hi,

First time I actually get to work with DR5 and M7310 phones. I can do basic configuration (say change time/date) but I haven't done any deep config work.

I have read the documentation and can't seem to find what I want to do.

Here is the situation:

We have 3 external lines each with a different number. Line number 3 is also our fax line.

When line 1 is in use, if someone from outside call the number of line 1 it is automatically redirected to line 2. If line 2 is also in use, it will redirect it to line 3.

Basically, what I want to do is setup my system so that if a line is busy, the call will automatically be redirected to a line that is not in use.

I think we use what is called trunk answering: phone rings and anybody can pick it up.

Thanks !

Call the phone company selling you dial tone.............
Ask for "CALL HUNTING" - "ROLLOVER" whatever they call it in your area of the country....

I was told that it worked in th old offices.

So there is nothing that I can do on my side ?

Hey Srenshaw, do you mean a "rollover type feature"? This must be added to your lines by your Telco.
This is sounding like what you have described/requested. Once terminated properly on the bix, on the line side..your system will know what to do.
However, you may also be speaking about HUNT GROUPS that is an option on NORSTAR that allows you to assign groups of sets/ext to be in a certain group, such that, when lines are assigned to that specifice HUNT GROUP only those extensions in that Hunt Group should answer...
Im being a little general here..but hoping it helps.

Yes it help.

But I'm not talking about hunt groups. We're too small to use those yet :)

I will have to talk to the phone company then.

Another thing: when I press the line 3 button of the phone I don't hear the dial tone. I see line 3 on the display but no tone.

What can I do about that ?

You said line 3 was for the FAX so it shouldn't be on the phone. you only want line 1 & 2 to hunt each other, if you hunt to line 3 your FAX will answer. You need the phone co to set up line 1 & 2 to hunt.

Could be a few things..but sounds as if..your system sees the line as far as access..you need to Find out where your Telco demarcd the line..main point of entry..meaning you should physically go to where your main phone panel is and check for labelling..sounds like you might have a 6X16 or 3X8 phone system..not sure as you didn't state..
Verify that the dialtone for line 3 is plugged into your phone system..if you have one of the above systems you should see an rj11 jack labelled on your system stating 1 2 3 etc..if nothing is labelled and or you don't have any idea what I'm talking about..call your nearest vendor..
Regards....

If I'm not mistaken it's a 8X24.

I will go check but phone system is not my area of expertise.

That confirm what I was thinking.

But thanks again for the help.

I just remembered something :)

We can receive and send faxes so the line must be plugged correctly in the phone panel.

And you have confirmed that you SHOULD have this number/ LINE 3 available on your system?

Some of the fax machines have a thingamajigger(I forgot the term-but it's a diode-sorry, oldtimers disease) that will block the dialtone if the fax is in use. The wiring of the line goes into the fax, then out to the phone system...

Your scenario seems that you have hunting from telco- you might be looking for circular instead of sequencial.

Sphoneman..I think your referring to an aftermarket product like "The Stick" This could be a possibility..
Can you specify hunting methods from your Telco?
I know the Telco I work for w/5ESS only offers one type..I'm sure its possible though...

Anyway..I think we need to take this a step back.
Srenshaw..when/how did this question come about? I just clued in that you said "it worked in the old office"
I take it you've recently moved locations?
If so..who moved the system? My gut tells me they didn't tie line 3 in properly if when selecting line 3 has no dialtone to sets.

The company I work for moved before I joined them.

Aad I only got there recently. And it's on my to do list to check what is wrong with the phones.

I spoke about it to my boss and he said we'll call the Telco.

Thanks again !

Good Luck..
If you can...post the resolution once attained..
Its always good to have closure on these ones!!

Their a several things to have them check. Have them verify that the lines roll over from 1 to 2 and not 3. Line 3 is your fax line, so you don't want calls going to the fax. Now your fax is probably connected directly to the line, thus bypassing the phone system. If you want to add it to the phone system, you must decide how you want that to work. Sounds like line 3 is already assigned to your phones, but will it ring or just appear? Telco will not verify that for you. I would ask if they could connect it to your system, and you could test it.
Most likely if it worked before, you should be fine.
