hello
i realy need some help . i am a newbie to all this phone stuff i am a computer networking guy .
i have an older toshiba phone system and one of my line share with a fax . i have the fax hook in before the phone system and have it set to answer faxs and not answer phone via distetive ring. my promblem is that the fax dails (when some one in our office try to fax ) even when the line is in use and it ends up dailing in the ear of who ever is on the phone ( big promble) i need to block the fax from dailing if the line is in use i was thinking there must be some ciruct that can cut the fax line if dail tone is gone PLEASE HELP

the incoming all works great my fax answers all fax and all call route to phone .it is only out going . my fax dails wether someone is on the phone or not .will that keep the fax from dail out in someones ear

will this work

yes it does isolate the line so no one can access it while in use.

I don't know if the link you posted will work or not. It looks like it should. The point of that link is to experiment so have at it.

why don't you just not put that particular trunk line into the phone system?

Another option if that is not what you are already doing is to put the phone line into the fax LINE/WALL jack, and then connect the phone system to the EXT jack on the fax machine. This is easy enough to do - just have a second jack by the fax and plug a cable from the EXT jack on the fax into that wall jack, and the cable from the other end of that second wall jack connects to the trunk on the phone system. This would work similar, but not exactly the same as an RJ31x connection for a security system.

The fax knows if the extension line is in use and will not try to dial out - it will say "Line in use". When the fax is off the hook it will shut off the EXT jack so that no one can interrupt the transmission. The fax effectively already contains the isolation switch.

One caveat here that I will point out using this method is that if your switch is advanced enough to do line monitoring it may get upset when that trunk line gets disconnected and may deactivate the circuit - requiring intervention to turn it back on. Most of them will just get a smile on their face when the line comes back up, and most smaller key systems, like if your Toshiba is a DK system or something like that, could care less. Just something to consider that could be a thorn in your side :)

Are you able to put another extn on the switch (capacity?) and have the fax line ring that on incoming and just select a line (9) when dialling out?
