Groupwise is a pain in the ass on Windows. Getting all the different pieces running is a hassle. It's much easier if you run it on NetWare. If that is an option, you should look into it.

it may be but would like to stay with widow for easy of attaching to our SAN

Hi,

True that Windows does make it a bit more of a task to install and configure GroupWise, but it does indeed work. Same features, same reliability (other than Windows itself crashing), but just a little less performance than on NetWare.

If you have never installed GroupWise before, it can be frustrating to install the gateways on any server platform. I would second the suggestion to run it on NetWare since it is just a more stable OS. Having a SAN does not preclude you from using NetWare, and licensing should not be an issue as you don't need any NetWare user licenses to run GroupWise.

If you must stay with Windows, then that is your call. You don't mention any specifics as to what your issues are, so I don't know that there's any advice I can provide you.

San license wise, he may need licenses to attach a Netware box to his storage server. IBM & EMC both have fees associated with this (Windows and Linux are often free though)
That said, I agree with other fellows.. Netware runs great on a SAN - I have two clusters at the moment running multipath wiht IBM hardware, including Groupwise. Netware even has a built in (native) MPIO driver..

If you can explain your exact problem(s) we can help I am sure. What happens when you try to install the GWIA? Does it install but then not load, does it load up but then not work?
When you say your "DNSing" is a problem, what are you referring to? Are you getting 400-errors on the GWIA? Who hosts your authorotative DNS?

Webaccess - what happens when you install webaccess? Do you get the startup page or nothing at all? Is Tomcat running? What webserver are you running webaccess on? (IIS ?)

Help us help you. :)

ok i had to go home to get to my test server

when setting up the relay host i use the send outbound mail directly to internet host
when i click next i get
no internet name resolution
the target server could not resolve internet names. you my not have dns configured corretly on the target machine
this is the first problem

Whichever system GWIA is running on needs to be able to resolve Internet host names.. You can bypass that part though and finish the install, just understand that it needs to be done before GWIA will work properly.

ok got it so that the no internet hose resolution does not come up but i am still not able to go get GWIA started when i go in to the services and try to strart GWIA i get the message that "The GWIA service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, ..." i have groupwise installed on a windows 2003 server and when i go to c:\grpwise\gwia\ and try to start gwia.exe from in thre it starts but closes right a way. when i send a email to my outside email address it does not go though.

any ideals what is happening here ?

All GroupWise agents are pretty good about writing error information out to the log file; even on startup errors. First, make sure you set the GWIA log level to VERBOSE. Then start up GWIA (and wait for it to shut down). Open up the GWIA log file and see what it says in there about the error condition that caused it to stop.

Typically, problems right at startup indicate some issue with it not being able to access the domain directory but you'll never know for sure without looking at the logs.
