Hi Guys I wonder if you might be able to offer some advice

I am having trouble connecting the backup server that I have rented from 1&1.

When I try to reach ftp://backup55.pureserver.info from any web browser it simply hangs. When I try with an FTP client it seems to connect momentarily and then the connection is closed by the remote server.

However when i use i am able to connect to it. I can connect to all other ftp servers from my machine so it seems unlikely that my network firewall would be blocking outgoing ftp.

I have the same problem when i try to connect to the server directly from my web server, and several friends on different networks cannot raise the ftp address either.

Could anyone suggest what might be the problem here, as I am tearing my hair out! When i spoke to 1&1 they said they were able to connect without problem.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Many thanks
Nick

I would think it's something with the ftp server configuration. (My guess is that some IP or DNS verification is taking place). My ftp server will disconnect users in much the same way if someone is trying to connect from a not allowed IP address. However, becuase mine checks IP address it will disconnect bad users immediately. In your case there is a significant delay before disconnection, so I suspect there's some DNS lookup going on.

or maybe even a traceroute back to you. Some sort of verification is going on before even giving an authentication request.

Thanks for your help Smah. I eventually managed to solve the problem - i needed to open up port 20 on the web server. I still can't connect from inside this network which is odd as I can connect to other FTP servers but i don't require this for backup purposes anyway.

Thanks

Nick
