I've read thru several posts regarding video card issues. I am new to this forum and am hopeful someone can point me in the right direction.

I recently built a pentium-based system:
Intel 865 PERL mobo
Intel 3.0 ghz 800 fsb
Antec 400W Smartpower
512mb
120gb
Nvidia FX5200 AGP 8x

It worked flawlessly for about 3 wks. I installed a new Tetris game and upon reboot, the monitor kept blinking on and off and the system just started going "nuts"....I thought I smelled something burning up, so I immediately unplugged everything.

Not sure what to do next, I swapped out the video card with an older Nvidia GeForce 2 mx 400 4x AGP and tried a restart. It booted right up with no issues (other than the drivers needing to be updated). From this, I assessed that the video card must of crashed and burned.

I was RMA'd another one and upon installation, there was no boot. The monitor said there was no signal. I RMA'd another one and this time I only got vertical bars...no boot.

Thinking the manufacturer of the FX 5200 was junk, I purchased the PNY Nvidia 6600GT 8x AGP card. I also installed a new LCD monitor.

When I went to reboot, I got no video signal. I did plug the molex into the graphics card and also tried a different rail.

I reinstalled the GeForce 2 4x AGP and it works fine.

I am stumped. Someone suggested power, but everything else is working fine...

Anyone have any suggestions? Is is possible to have a bad AGP slot, only with 8x cards?

Just APG or PCI. It's set at AGP

It's just strange. I had an 8x card that worked and then "burned up"?? after 3 wks. Since then, I can only get the 4x card to work.

I need help!

Certainly sounds like you have a motherbourd AGP slot problem.
I'm wondering if the slot isn't supplying a high enough voltage to initialize these more powerful cards.
AGP voltage can sometimes be increased in the bios but proceed with caution.
Personally I think you may need to RMA the motherboard but you need to be absolutely sure of your diagnosis.
Check both of these cards in another machine.
Make sure motherboard bios is set to default settings just in case voltages were inadvertently lowered.

Thank you for the information. I was thinking the same thing about the board. I have tried 3 different 8x AGP cards from 2 different manufacturers. I don't have a machine handy to try these other video cards out in.

I just think since the 8x AGP slot originally functioned properly and now doesn't...there must be something up with the slot. I do know the GeForce2 mmx 400 AGP 4x card works in both my new system and the system I temporarily pulled it from.

I don't have much experience with bios and voltage, but it's a compatible card as determined by both mobo specs and card specs.

In your opinion, could it be a power issue? I would think an Antec Smartpower 400W would suffice.

And that's why I didn't mention the power supply, Antec have an excellent reputation for providing powerful and stable units but anything is possible.
400 watts from a quality supply is more than enough for this system but as I said anything is possible so if you have access to a replacement then it would certainly be worth swapping out to be sure especially as you suspected something burned.
