Need help with Actiontec 1524SU DSL Router

We need to SSH and FTP into a server on the web from behind this DSL Gateway. Unfortunately we cannot. The linux server has a firewall (iptables) requiring the IP address of all the machines that access it. Now, what IP address do we program the SSH machine with in order to access it from the DSL connection? The public IP address of the gateway/router? We tried that. We even put the internal workstation in the DMZ of the Actiontec and we are still not able to connect SSH or FTP. Any ideas? I hope I am in the right forum.
