hi. i bought a ccna labs routers packages from ebay.
the packages has 2 2514 routers and 3 kentrox datasmart 686.
he said this packages can be use simulate T1, or something, i don't remember. i use the routers to practice and it's pretty good.

I haven't touched those 3 kentrox datasmart.
if anyone know what they are for and know how to set it up for home lab. please teach me. thank you very much.

please explain what they are for and how to use them.
i did search them on the web, but not much information about them.

I'm pretty sure the kentrox box is a csu/dsu. I've got a few of them floating around work that we've taken out of service. Do you have a cable with an rj45 type connection on one end and like a db-15 connector on the other? What you can do is use the csu/dsu to simulate a t1 between a couple of routers. Here is a link that you can create a crossover cable to use between the csu's:

Lerdalt. thank you very much.
love to hear your reply. feeling touched :")

the package comes with 1 crossover cable and few straight cable.

On the back of the kentrox, it has a V.35 connector, RJ45 connector(i duno whether it's cat1-5, but that's how it's like). 1 female db9(with a label:DCE) and 1 male db9(DTE)
,also another DB15 Male connector with a label: network.

the package comes with alot of AUI transceiver, DB9-to-V60 converter, DB15-to-cat5, and alot of accessories . There's a V35-to-DB60 convertor, i duno what is it for.

"Do you have a cable with an rj45 type connection on one end and like a db-15 connector on the other? "
i have this one.

so what i need to do is to use this converter and connect both kentrox box using crossover cable and plug them into db15 on both kentrox box?????

revise cable name: ( DB9-to-V60 converter,)<--wrong
it's DB9-to-db25 female

and

a converter: v35-to-female 25
don't know what is this for ?can you tell me please??

Just remember it's a different kind of crossover cable. The pinout is different because it's not an ethernet connection.

What you'll end up doing is connecting the kentrox v.35 cable to one of the router's serial interface via the v35-db60 connector. I'd go pick up a couple of rj45 jacks and make a little t1 crossover cable with the jacks on each end from the weblink I posted earlier.

of course all this is a lot easier if you already have the dce and dte cables.

i actually can buy a dtc/dce back-to-back cable,
but the 3 kentrox boxs become useless. ==

Lerdalt, thank you.

i have question about a router cable.

i have a cable: BD 60 and both sides are male and each side lable DTE or DCE.

what is the difference to those cable using 2 combine into 1 to form back-to-back?? the cisco books and website tell ppl to get back-to-back cable form a WAN connection(T1?)

is this back-to-back cable able to simulate T1??
is my DB60 dtc/dce able to do so??

No, that does not exactly simulate a T1 connection. The v35 DB-60 cables simulate a simple WAN connection. The DCE is Digital Communications Equipment, and DTE is Digital Termination Equipment. The DCE end needs a clock rate applied to it. These cables can be used also to simulate a frame-relay connection. Three routers are needed for this---one DCE router, one acting as a frame-relay switch, and a third as a DTE router. But for a simple WAN serial connection, just two routers are needed, with a clock rate applied to the DCE end.
Also, T1 cables are usually shielded, whereas ethernet cables are unshielded. An ethernet cable will do to simulate a T1 connection, though, as long as it is a T1 crossover, the pinouts diagrammed in the link provided above by lerdalt.
