Hi Folks,
Could you please help me out in this. My client just started implementing LiveLink. So, If any of you guys have any help manual/sequence of instructions to learn Oscript/Weblingo Please share with me.

Thanks in advance and I really appreciate your help.

Regards
Prasad

Prasad,
Livelink OScript, LAPI, WebLingo and WebServices are intrinsically linked to how Livelink functions, so I'd recommend that you get to know how Livelink works as a good place to start.

I'd recommend taking the OT training courses on Builder as they are the best places to learn, also once you have installed the Builder there are some online tutorials there which will provide you with a simple setup.

Also the OT Developer Network site ( the KC ( and my LL site ( should provide plenty of resources.

Perhaps Greg G & Appnair should co-author an LL book ???
i would buy one; LL seems to be lacking the resources like sharepoint (in the book sense).

but i assume LL has closed off these avenues to a large degree via the proprietary method.

A little bit of history is in order. When I was first tasked with writing a LAPI routine in 2003 or about that time, I had attended training a few years back but did not have the chance to use it. I looked in KB for code samples and none was forthcoming. I chanced on Greg's Site which had a lot of web lingo excerpts which I could not use. Needless to say I managed to write my lapi code which I released as the bulk downloader code in Greg's site. This was possible by a kind developer pointing out the last portions of what I was missing. Like Greg I always repay what I get which is more always. Later Greg suggested a few more code snippets and whenever I was able to write one I shared it. I say it with pride that Greg's site was the first to operate with full code samples etc and OT actually followed suit a few years later :) I was also fortunate in my job to learn oscript so it makes my life as a LAPI developer way too easy as I can see what LAPI is doing. Oscript is a beautiful language but it lacks a lot of bells and whistles that you associate with a modern IDE. All is not lost OT is releasing oclipse an eclipse plug in for Oscript. The OT marketing machine does not want a lot of oscript programmers out there for their vested interests and they scare customers into believing they should not do any oscript. But as I or Greg can vouch oscript is relatively easy if you understand Livelink and many organizations derive a lot of un harnessed power by sending people to training.Donna Nalls a doyen of oscript code even had a break out session one time titled 'Oscript is OK'
Still I find that a structured class room training is more suited for oscript rather than a book since the reader may not clearly understand the tasks in hand.

Well, if I called the wrong number, why did you answer the phone?

a Livelink book had been discussed a while ago and had the support of OT and a few interested publishers. The problem was sorting out the content and audience for the book, do we focus on End User / Power User / Admin / Developer, which modules do we include etc ?

Am more than happy to revisit it if we can iron out a suitable content list and some volunteer co-authors to supplement my own, and appnair's, knowledge base.

I must really appreciate Greg and Nair for being actively involved in sharing and helping all the Livelink Developers. I still didn't get my password for the KB and i am in the process of understanding how livelink modules work.

I need one more favour, if it's possible for you guys. Do you guys have any FAQs, atleast I will know what all the topics i need to cover for some extent based on the questions...

Thanks guys for all the help...

Prasad,
Can you provide some more clarity on your role, are you going to be developing for Livelink (using the API's or WebServices or inside LL - OScript) or are you going to be responsible for the Admin etc ?

Greg,

I am basically a Developer and will be working on Forms Creation, Live Reports and customizing the Templates using OScript/Weblingo, and preparing documentation and training to the livelink users..So, mostly i work inside Livelink.(Initially)

I worked on VB, ASP, .Net and Java Technologies. And, now on my client wants me to work on Livelink modules. Since I am very new to this area i am trying my level best to learn the things faster...Not Admin role..

Your help is highly appreciated.

I beleive what that is being said here refers to form templates than web lingo templates there is a difference. As a end user of livelink one is able to do livereports, form templates and forms. These are all programming/dev tasks without the need for oscript.

Customizing the templates using weblingo/oscript tyically means that the organization plans to add/amend /extend what came form OpenText.Perhaps you want to add a new command on the function menu, perhaps you want to get a little more form a standard workflow those things.

So make sure you mean weblingo which means that you will need builder and a working ll environment and knowledge to work within it.

Well, if I called the wrong number, why did you answer the phone?

Yes.

I need to involve in both ways. Helping the end users (as you said live reports/forms creation and saving them) and as well as working on weblingo templates customization using Oscript. That's what i was told. So, I am concentrating on both at the moment.

Thanks
Prasad

most of the LL Form stuff can be enhanced using Javascript, AJAX, Server Side code etc, see for some samples of that. If you are doing this kind of thing then you may get away without using any OScript etc.

For some Livelink WebLingo customisations see as a starting place.
