I just purchased an older home that I would like to wire with cat5e, and use flush jacks. Does anyone have any tips or URLS for tutuorials for doing this? On one hand, I'd like to keep the drywall removal to a minimum. But, I really want to do this right.

Thank you,

Jody.

Old home retrofit cabling installatons can be very difficult. This type of installation usually requires many different types of installation tools.Without further specifications and without knowing the structural make-up of the home my input will be limited. For flush mounted outlets your best bet will be to utilize inside walls as opposed to using outside walls of your home. There are many possibilties for your installation but I need more info to work with.Later...Check out these sites:cabling-design.com,cablingdirectory.com

Residential construction, especially older construction, has many horizontal blocks inside the walls behind the drywall, even on inside walls. Very rarely do you find a straight hollow shot down the wall.

This will be a difficult install for you. My only generic recommendation is to find a helpful friend who has done this before. I have done too many residential and businesses retrofited in residential construction to know this probably will not be a fun project.

Here is a .pdf that generalizes some residentinal wiring practices and diagrams

Good Luck!

Lots and lots of different styles, lengths and sizes of drill bits for drilling wood, masonary and even metal, plus you will become very creative at adaptding what ever is lying about to use as a "fish",also when you are out shopping etc you will be keeping half an eye out for things that will make your installs easier in the future.I'm sure all the cablers out there have a variety of "stuff" collected over time that it would be a real pain in the arse if it ever went missing.Go on admit it we all treasure that something thats absolutly worthless to anybody except a CABLER. Whats yours then, where did you get it and how much was it??????????.

Mine is a yellow fibreglass pole (one piece) about 8 foot long with just about the right mixture of stiffnes and flexability used for every job i do, it cost me nothing as i couldn't help "borrowing" it when i saw it doing nothing in a transit bus station,i found out they cut them up and use them to trigger the garage door openers

I did some cabling in my basement a week ago. I have a piece of 3/4" PVC Conduit on top of my workbench and there are a few Cat5e cables in it. I wanted to pull another cable through but I couldn't just push the cable. So I "borrowed" some metal clothes hangers from my mom, cut them up, bent them straight, and taped them together. Worked pretty well.
Another thing I have done to fish across a ceiling (only 4-5 feet across), is to take a yardstick, tie the cable on one end and a string to the other end, and have a friend go to the other side, get the string and pull the whole thing out. jeff moss

If security and speed are not the most important priority, I would go with wireless. Cabling would take several hours, and as mentioned before there are many obstacles in the walls. Wireless would be up and running in minutes. The range of wireless would definitely cover the entire house.
