I am new to the forum and new to a managed hosting Windows Server 2003. The managed hosting tech support is useless and I know zero about what is the best way to set things up. All I need is to allow 5 people access to one MS Access 2002 database on the server. I was hoping to control what part of the database they each see by having them use different mde files (Access front-end interfaces) which already exist. The 2 options I can think of are:

1. Have them run the front end on their local computers and access the backend via an ODBC connection.
2. Set up separate user accounts on the server, make them login, and put a shortcut on the desktop that would run the front-end mde for each of them.

I have no experience with Windows Server, but do know XP Pro. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. kuau

Your question is really about MSAccess Security. There are ways within access to limit security within specific tables. Try posting your question in Forum700 or one of the other MSAccess forums.

You say this is a managed system, I would not recommend accessing an Access database over a WAN. You should instead consider using MS SQL.

If you can't afford the full version of SQL, Microsoft does offer the SQL Express version for free.

Locking down security on tables in SQL is easy.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
