need help setting up home network

hi what i have are two desktops running on windows xp os, we have a brand 2wire 1070b ethernet modem it only has one port, and i have a linksys befsr41 4port ethernet router. the problem i run into is i try to use the setup wizard for linksys router and it stops me midway stating that it was "unable to connect to router". i have already tried to unplug and make sure that all cables are connected right (using cat 5 cables) and also pressing the reset buttons and retrying the setup on both the modem and router.

i need some guidance. i was told to set up modem on pppoe and then use static ip for router or vice versa. i just need to know step by step how i can successfully configure both devices so that i can share dsl access between two computers. any help would be appreciated. btw... our isp is sbc dsl thanks!!!
